Around Athen  
 
Horticultural Walking Tour of University of Georgia
Visit www.uga.edu/hort/arboretum/ugacampusarboretum.htm to download a brochure of three different walks around campus, showcasing the finest specimens on the North, Central, and South Campuses. While taking the North Campus tour, be sure to stop by the beautiful Founder's Garden, located behind Denmark Hall. The Founders Garden was installed in 1946 as a living memorial to the twelve founders of the Ladies' Garden Club of Athens, established in 1891 as the first garden club in America.
 
Athens Welcome Center

Stop by for daily tours of Athens, by Classic City Tours. The welcome center is housed in the historic Church-Waddel-Brumby House (c. 1820), a house museum that is believed to be the oldest surviving residence in Athens.
 
Georgia Museum of Art

See over 7,000 works of art in the permanent collection, including 19th and 20th century American painting, decorative arts, American and European prints and drawings from the Renaissance to the present, and Italian Renaissance painting.
 
State Botanical Garden of Georgia

Explore a 313-acre preserve of planned gardens, nature trails, and a conservatory filled with local and exotic plants.
Walking Tour of Downtown Athens
Take a self-guided tour of historic homes, churches, commercial buildings, and university buildings, with an emphasis on the architecture and local history. Brochure available at the Athens Welcome Center (706) 353-1820.

Sautee and Nacoochee Valleys
This area in Northeast Georgia is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Georgia's first rural historic district. Take Route 129 North to GA Highway 75 Northeast; drive time is approximately 1.5 hours. Highlights include:

Madison
A small town spared by Sherman on his historic March to the Sea. Madison boasts quaint streets lined with Antebellum and Victorian homes and buildings; some homes have tours. Madison is just thirty minutes south of Athens on Route 441, making for a perfect afternoon trip. For more details, call the Welcome Center at 800-709-7406, or visit www.madisonga.org.
 
Antebellum Trail
This trail, beginning in Athens, and including stops in Watkinsville, Madison (see above), Eatonton, Milledgeville, Old Clinton, and Macon, highlights homes, museums, and other places of interest from Georgia's antebellum history. Around Atlanta
 
Atlanta History Center

The museum follows the history of Georgia and the Southeast, as well as Atlanta itself. With a collection of photographs and artifacts, the Center is located on 32 acres of woods with many walking trails. Also visit the Swan House and Tullie Smith Farm, two historic homes on the property. Call for times of house tours.
 
CNN Studios

Take a tour of the studios for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of news in the making. Reservations are recommended.
 
Centennial Olympic Park
